Upama: easy breakfast






  • Upama: This is easy, popular breakfast of Maharashtra. Upama is also made in different parts of India. 
  • Ingredients: 
  • 1 cup semolina, 
  • 4/5 green chilies, 
  • 3 medium onions, 
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal( black gram lentils), 
  • 2 tomatoes, 
  •  Oil 2 tablespoons,
  •  Grated ginger 1/2 teaspoon, 
  • Curry leaves 4/5, 
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds, 
  • 1/4 teaspoon hing powder,
  •  Water 2 &1/2 cup, 
  • Salt 1 teaspoon, 
  • Sugar 2 teaspoons,
  •  1 lemon, 
  • Coriander leaves

  • Procedure:
  •  Peel and onions into small cubes. 
  • Wash and cut tomatoes into small cubes. 
  • Wash and cut green chilies.
  • Wash, peel and grate ginger.
  • Wash, cut and squeeze lemon for juice. 
  • Heat the pan on medium flame. 
  • Add semolina and roast for five minutes while stirring  regularly. 
  •  Roast until little brown.
  •  Keep aside.
  •  Take 2 and 1/2 cup water in a sauce pan and boil. 
  • Add oil in the pan. 
  • Add mustard seeds. 
  • When the seeds crackle add urad dal.
  •  Stir well. 
  • Add green chilies and saute for few seconds. 
  • Add chopped onion.
  •  Keep stirring. 
  • Add chopped tomato, grated ginger and curry leaves and saute for few seconds.  
  • Add boiled water in a pan.  
  • Add salt and sugar. 
  • Add semolina in a boiling mixture.
  •  Add lemon juice.
  •  Stir well. 
  • Keep lid and cook for 3/4 minutes on low flame. 
  •  Wash and chop coriander leaves finely. 
  • Garnish with fresh chopped coriander leaves.
  •  Serve hot!
